DI: San Diego Aztecs handily defeat OMBAC DI
On Saturday, at Robb Field in Ocean Beach, the San Diego Aztecs DI side pummeled OMBAC's DI side 51 - 12. Most of the scoring occurred on break-aways and OMBAC seemed to have no idea how to shut down the Aztec's style of open play. In the set pieces and phase play, the OMBAC team appeared to be better coached and technically very competent. The OMBAC players also appeared to be more disciplined and, by a small but certain margin, more fit than the Aztecs. But in the open play, OMBAC's players were clearly unfamiliar with how to mount an adequate tackling defense or how to better control the ball and keep it unavailable to the Aztec's halfbacks. Equally, OMBAC's players appeared unable to execute their own coherent back play attacks out of phase play. Despite playing hard and working at the game, this group of OMBAC players looked like a hastily assembled group of second and third string players that have been working on conditioning and game fundamentals but not playing together in significant competitions.
The Aztecs hard work and constant opportunistic play, on the other hand, seemed to come from being very familiar with each other and having drilled together on sophisticated second and third phase play formations.
I can only guess from this lopsided score that OMBAC has taken too many of their DI players off their DI side (in order for them to play well in the PRP), leaving them unable to consistently field a competitive team in the DI environment of SCRFU.
